10 – Walk Ruivo do Paúl

The Walk Ruivo do Paúl starts in Lombo do Mouro on the way up to Paúl da Serra from Encumeada. Here we start following the Levada through an easy and flat path. Along the way, we will encounter breathtaking views of the São Vicente valley.

After a while, we walk under a waterfall passing by Pináculo, which is a detached basaltic rock. On this spot, we take a short break to enjoy nature and admire the landscape of the north side of the island and the highest mountains.

Afterward, we follow a stone-paved path that was built many years ago in order for locals to travel from the north to the south of the island.

We continue our journey going up to Bica da Cana where we can observe the plateau of Paúl da Serra. Then, we make our way to Ruivo do Paúl, which is located at 1640 meters above sea level. At this location, we have a panoramic view of São Vicente valley and the central mountain range.

Throughout this wonderful walk, we are able to observe vegetation rich in small endemic plants, such as the Madeiran orchids, the canary buttercups, the mandon’s chrysanthemum, and geraniums. At this elevation, we can observe native high-altitude vegetation, as well as Laurissilva forest vegetation, Madeira’s endemic forest.

After a short descend to Estanquinhos, we finish our trip.
