20 – Levada dos Prazeres
Levada dos Prazeres starts in Calheta, on the Southside of Madeira. This journey takes us West towards Prazeres parish.
It is an easy path where we can find good weather almost every day of the year. The Levada flows between 600 and 700 meters in altitude.
The watercourse we follow is Levada Nova da Calheta which stretches for more than 40 km. On our trip, we cover 6 km of it.
On this pleasant walk, we find a diversity of sceneries, such as farmlands and small houses; exotic forests composed of introduced trees and plants, like pine trees, eucalyptus, and acacias. We can also observe some species of the Laurissilva Forest (Laurel Forest), an endemic forest, composed of plants and trees that can only be seen on Madeira Island.
The Laurissilva Forest is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1999.
