12 – Levada dos Maroços
Levada dos Maroços is an easy and flat Levada walk which is also known as Mimosa Valley due to the abundance of Mimosa trees. It is a half-day walk that takes us along Machico valley, more specifically the Maroços area.
On this walk, we are able to discover the interior of the parish, which is an excellent example of life on the rural outskirts of Machico.
This Levada was built to irrigate the surrounding farmlands. The water is collected from various streams and tributaries that intersect the Levada.
Along the way, we encounter beautiful views over the fantastic Machico bay. We can also observe the traditional terraced fields that are so typical of the Madeiran agricultural landscape. We might be lucky enough to taste some fresh fruit that farmers sell along the Levada.
This is a perfect walk to discover a bit more about the culture and traditions of Madeira.
