13 – Levada Vale Paraíso

The Levada Vale Paraíso is a half-day walk that starts in Choupana, on the outskirts of Funchal, and finishes in Camacha. The water channel we follow is known as Levada da Serra do Faial.

This Levada walk is very easy and flat. The path is quite wide and therefore, it is suitable for almost everyone.

In the beginning, we will be surprised by the fantastic views over Funchal city. From here we have a different perspective of Madeira’s capital.

Along the way, we will encounter exotic vegetation and large trees such as oaks, pines, and eucalyptus.

We will also observe the typically cultivated terraces and learn about Madeiran agriculture and traditions.

Towards the end of the walk, we will find spectacular views over Camacha village.

We chose this company for the simple reason they were cheaper than the other tour companies but offered the same walks. We did a 6 km walk to paradise valley (Serra do Faial, Vale Paraiso). It was lovely, our guide Nick spoke perfect English. He was very knowledgeable about the history, economy, culture, traditions, and flora and fauna of Madeira and patiently answered all questions. The walk was easy for us. You do need some moderate level of mobility and fitness. One lady with our group did struggle with the walk owing to asthma. Nick showed her a short cut to assist her and she met us at the end. We stopped halfway round at a charming and reasonably priced local cafe where we tried the chestnut cake and could use the facilities. It was a lovely half-day trip and a great way to experience some of the lovely countryside. I would use this company again.
